You know what I like about movies? They tell you the things your subconscience is subtly telling you, and movies actually put it into context.
Ok first of all, if you’re planning of watching the movie in the near ever, don’t read this until you actually see the movie. So from hereon, I assume that you’ve watched the flick, orayt?
(translation: major spoiler).
So, I first heard of the movie from Jake and he told me it was awesome, so I went and see it tonight. Alone.
Ate ticket-er: Isa lang po? (may laman ang pagkasabi!)
AIka: *caught off-guard* err…yup?
And awesome, it was.
Here’s the WHOLE story:
- Ted and Summer.
- Ted worked as a greeting card writer, while Summer was his boss’s assistant
- Ted was the hopeless romantic type who believed in happy endings and love and destiny.
- Summer, however, did not believe in love at all.
- Ted fell head over heels with Summer. They both have the same taste in music and that got the ball rolling.
- but she just want to be friends since she’s not really the relationship type.
- but they still kiss and go out together and have sex and all those stuff couples would normally do – except that they aren’t a couple.
- Tom was now confused what’s really going on between them
- Summer still played the ‘just friends’ card.
- They “broke up”.
- Ted was so fucked up, he can’t move on.
- They saw each other again.
- Summer was getting married.
- Ted still was so fucked up he can’t move on. STill.
- He was able to move on.
- Tom and Summer saw each other and pretty much cleared everything. Ironically, Summer now believed in destiny, and Tom became a non-believer of love.
- Tom met Autumn.
-end-
So, there’s the story. If you are the sneaky kind and you made past MY spoiler even if you haven’t watch the movie yet(don’t blame me! You’ve been warned), you can still catch the flick and enjoy it indefinitely.
What’s special about (500) days of summer is the way it was narrated. It was clear from the start that Tom and Summer will not end up together, but the ‘why not’ was the important question. The story jumps from the 5th day to the 289th day then back to 6th day. The creativity of the movie made it so awesome.
Not to mention Zooey Deschanel performance as Summer. She’s so effective and that might be one of the major reasons why this works.
I also love how the motion picture played the point of view. It was able to separate what Tom wanted to see and what Tom should have seen. It was awesome.
(500) Days of Summer is not your ordinary love story flick. It’s probably your subconscience talking to you.
Well, at least for me
(ergo: the movie’s great. watch it!)

I’ve been down in the past weeks and this movie totally put words on my mouth. Remember this entry, the one when I was this close to actually finding answers but I slept again so I forgot?
Well, this movie is like freakin Confucius! Boom! Answer. Boom! Answer.
I was literally smiling while on the cab after watching a movie. Everything’s clear. It showed me the vast difference between reality and expectations.
Simply put, it’s like this:
Dear Aika,
*insert the whole movie (500) days of summer here*
Love,
your alter ego
——
I think I can relate most to Tom SOOOO much. But subconsciously, I am a Summer, me thinks.
So, when does the 1st of my 500 days starts?
——
QUotes from the movie:
Rachel Hansen: Tom, I know you think she was the one, but I don’t. Next time you look back, I think you should look again.
***
Summer: I woke up one morning and I just knew.
Tom: Knew what?
Summer: What I was never sure of with you.
(then there was this big ‘awe’ in the theater. Super sad.)
***
Rachel Hansen: Just because she’s likes the same bizzaro crap you do doesn’t mean she’s your soul mate.
***
Narrator: This is a story of boy meets girl. The boy, Tom Hansen of Margate, New Jersey, grew up believing that he’d never truly be happy until the day he met the one. This belief stemmed from early exposure to sad British pop music and a total mis-reading of the movie ‘The Graduate’. The girl, Summer Finn of Shinnecock, Michigan, did not share this belief. Since the disintegration of her parent’s marriage she’d only love two things. The first was her long dark hair. The second was how easily she could cut it off and not feel a thing. Tom meets Summer on January 8th. He knows almost immediately she is who he has been searching for. This is a story of boy meets girl, but you should know upfront, this is not a love story.
***
Paul: Robin is better than the girl of my dreams. She’s real.
***
Tom: Did you ever even have a boyfriend?
Summer: Of course.
Tom: What happened, why didn’t they work out?
Summer: What always happens? Life.
***
Tom: “Well this is, and Rhoda, no disrespect, but um, this is total shit. Go for it? You can do it? That’s not inspirational that’s suicidal! If pickles goes for it right there that’s a dead cat. Lies, were liars think about it, why do people buy these things? It’s not because they wanna say how they feel, people buy cards cause they can’t say how they feel or they’re afraid too. We provide the service that lets them off the hook. You know what? I say to hell with it. Lets level with America at least let them speak for themselves right I mean look, look. What is this, what does this say? “Congratulations on your new baby.” How bout “congratulations on your new baby, guess that’s it for hanging out, nice knowing ya.” How bout this one? With all the pretty hearts on the front, I think I know where this ones going. Yup “Happy Valentines Day sweetheart, I love you.” Isn’t that sweet? Ain’t love grand? This is exactly what I’m talking about. What does that even mean, love? Do you know? Do you? Anybody? If somebody gave me this card Mr. Vance, I’d eat it. It’s these cards, and the movies and the pop songs, they’re to blame for all the lies and the heartache, everything. We’re responsible. I’M responsible. I think we do a bad thing here. People should be able to say how they feel, how they really feel, not ya know, some words that some stranger put in their mouth. Words like love, that don’t mean anything. Sorry, I’m sorry, I um, I quit. There’s enough bullshit in the world without my help.”
***
McKenzie: [drunk] So do you have a boyfriend?
Summer: No.
McKenzie: Why not?
Summer: Because I don’t want one.
McKenzie: Come on; I don’t believe that.
Summer: You don’t believe that a woman could enjoy being free and independent?
McKenzie: Are you a lesbian?
Summer: [laughing] No I’m not a lesbian. I just, don’t feel comfortable being anyone’s girlfriend. I don’t actually feel comfortable being anyone’s anything.
McKenzie: I don’t know what you’re talking about.
Summer: Really?
McKenzie: Nope.
Summer: Ok, let me break it down for you–
McKenzie: Break it down!
Summer: Ok. I, like being on my own. I think relationships are messy and people’s feelings get hurt. Who needs it? We’re young, we live in one of the most beautiful cities in the world; might as well have fun while we can and, save the serious stuff for later.
McKenzie: You’re a dude. [to Tom] She’s a dude!
Tom: Ok but wait–wait. What happens, if you fall in love?
[she scoffs]
Tom: What?
Summer: You don’t believe that, do you?
Tom: It’s love, it’s not Santa Claus.
